The Warrenville Public Works Department is comprised of four divisions that are responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City's infrastructure and grounds/facilities and the purchase, maintenance, and repair of City vehicles and equipment. The Superintendent of Public Works oversees the day-to-day operations of the Department. The Department has 16 employees including four Lead Supervisors who oversee the Divisions of Utility, Street, Equipment, and Facilities Maintenance. The remainder of the Department is made up of six Utility Maintenance Workers and five Street Maintenance Workers. It is responsible for 48 miles of sanitary sewer main and 63 miles of municipal streets, alleys, right-of-ways, and sidewalks, a fleet of 60 vehicles and pieces of equipment, and 5 facilities and their associated grounds, and five public areas. The Department operates out of the Public Works Facility located at 3S346 Mignin Drive. Administration for the Department is located at City Hall. Residents needing service on public property, such as repairing a streetlight, filling a pothole, trimming a parkway tree, replacing damaged sidewalk, etc. can complete a service request form. Emergency service, such as a water main break, should be immediately directed to the Department via phone at 630/393-9050. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For emergencies after hours, contact the Police Department at 630/393-2131 or dial 911.
The Street Maintenance Division is responsible for much more than just City streets. Besides constructing, repairing or maintaining streets, the Division is responsible for the maintenance of the City’s storm sewers, streetlights, street signage, and sidewalks. The City has initiated a 15-year road program to ensure that funding is available to maintain the City’s roadways up to an acceptable standard. Storm sewer systems located in the right-of-way are inspected and cleaned to provide continued drainage up to design standards. The City has adopted a comprehensive approach to projects that incorporates all facets of the infrastructure required to service the community. The design phase of a road project includes evaluation of infrastructure located above and beneath the roadway. A comprehensive approach such as this delivers a long lasting product that also beautifies the area. For example, a project may include numerous storm structure repairs, curb repair, new asphalt, painting and retrofitting of the street light fixtures, and fire hydrant sand blasting and painting. The Division is also responsible for the grounds and building maintenance of all City properties and buildings. This includes mowing lawns, trimming trees, and making building repairs. Additionally, the Division maintains Cerny Park, provides snow removal on local roads, and conducts storm cleanup after severe weather. Finally, the Division provides manpower and equipment for special events held in the community. Public Works staff assist in setup, takedown, and support throughout the duration of the event. Aside from staff support, equipment and supplies are provided by the City such as tents, electrical cords, garbage cans, portable toilets, and other miscellaneous items. The major event support is provided to the two-day Chamber of Commerce Summer Daze, the Lions Club Chicken and Corn Fest, the Park District Holly Days event, the Arbor Day Celebration, and the 4th of July.
The Utility Maintenance Division is responsible for ensuring that Warrenville residents have clean, safe drinking water and a functioning sanitary sewer system. It operates the water and sanitary sewer utilities within the corporate limits of the City and maintains the water and sewer utilities located with the right-of-way (street area). The City invests in the upkeep and maintenance of the water and sewer infrastructure to minimize any potential service interruptions. Personnel inspect and record data from all the water pumping facilities every day of the year. The City of Warrenville has not had to issue a water boil order in over fifteen years. The current capabilities of the water system supply, production, and storage provide for a reliable and adequate quantity of water to meet demands required by the community. Water flow tests from fire hydrants located throughout the distribution system, one of the factors used in calculating insurance rates, have consistently shown that there is more than enough water available to fight large fires. In addition to the flow capabilities of the distribution system, there is significant redundancy built into the water supply. The water supply can produce over three times the average daily consumption and twice the maximum daily consumption. The excess production capacity provides for continued production to meet demands during routine and emergency maintenance of the facilities. In addition to the capacity, the system incorporates natural gas generators for each production facility. The water production can continue for years during an extended electrical outage without compromising any production rates, ensuring potable water for consumption and fire protection. The Division will investigate and troubleshoot water customer concerns free of charge by assisting with issues associated with interior plumbing such as high water consumption, low water pressure, and clogged sewer lines. Personnel are available on a 24-hour basis for emergencies regarding water or sanitary sewer problems.
