Status of "Preferred Alternative" Projects - March 13, 2016

The City of Warrenville formally submitted a detailed review comment letter to DuPage County on January 17, 2012 regarding the various preliminary engineering plans prepared by DuPage County consultants. A copy of this letter can be accessed by clicking here

DuPage County worked with the City of Warrenville and affected property owners (private and public) to move these projects forward. To date, all of the projects have been completed:

The "Phase I" project included the construction of a levee at Bower Elementary School to protect the school property from flooding. DuPage County and the School District have accredited the levee through FEMA. Through an Intergovernmental Agreement, the School District is responsible for the long-term ownership and maintenance of the levee.

The "Phase II" project included the excavation of significant compensatory storage in the floodplain and floodway for the projects and the construction of a flood protection berm along the east side of River Road between Bower Elementary School and Warrenville Road.  Significant improvements were made to the vegetation and habitat within the limits of this project to improve water quality in this corridor.

The "Phase III" projects are complete. These projects included the removal and replacement of the Warrenville Road bridge (complete) and the re-meander of the West Branch DuPage River so it aligned with the bridge.  These projects will reduce depth of flooding in the area immediately north of Warrenville Road.  In conjunction with these projects, DuPage County acquired and demolished the commercial building on the north side of Warrenville Road and east bank of the river.
