Open Burning Permits

Only dry, seasoned wood is to be burned at any time. It is a violation of the open burning ordinance to burn leaves, grass, rubbish or garbage, and/or any wood that is still green or has been freshly cut.

Residential fires that are less than two feet by two feet by two feet do not require a burn permit, they are allowable any day of the week, and must be continually supervised by someone over the age of 16. If placed in an approved container, the fire must be a minimum of fifteen feet from any temporary or permanent building and/or fence. If the fire is not in an approved container, it must be located a minimum of fifty feet from and temporary or permanent building and/or fence.

Residential fires (bonfires and large landscape fires) that are greater than two feet by two feet by two feet and up to five feet by five feet by five feet require an Open Burning Permit. These fires are only permitted on Fridays and Saturdays for a maximum of five consecutive hours and must be placed a minimum of fifty feet from any temporary or permanent building and/or fence. The approved Open Burning placard must be present and visible during the duration of the bonfire or large landscape fire.

To obtain an Open Burning permit, you must complete the Open Burning permit application and attach a site plan of the property indicating where the burning will take place and where the water source is located in relation to the burn site.  The property will be inspected before the permit will be approved.  Open burn application must be submitted to the Community Development Department a minimum of three business days prior to the scheduled open burning.  If you have any questions, contact Community Development at (630)393-9050.
