Yard and Home Checklist for Residents
Residents can do a number of things to reduce mosquito breeding sites around the home. The Culex mosquito, the carrier of West Nile Virus (WNV) only flies 1-2 miles. Every 7-10 days, a new hatch of mosquitos can be produced in an area. Residents can take the following steps to reduce potential mosquito breed sites:
- Discarding old tires, tin cans, buckets, bottles, and other water-holding containers.
- Fill in or drain any low places in the yard, holes in trees, or hollow stumps.
- Keep gutters, drains, and ditches clean so that water will drain properly.
- Repair leaky pipes and faucets.
- Cover trash containers to keep water out.
- Empty plastic wading pools at least once a week and store indoors when not in use.
- Change the water in birdbaths and plant pots at least once a week.
- Stock ornamental ponds with mosquito eating fish or use mosquito larva control products.
- Keep grass short and shrubbery well-trimmed around your house.
- Report mosquito-breeding sites to your local mosquito control agency.

General Information
In the fall of 2018, the City received a written correspondence from the DuPage County Health Department requesting that the City consider participating in their mosquito abatement program. At their December 17, 2018, meeting the Warrenville City Council approved the implementation of a mosquito abatement program, limited to the application of larvicide in City storm sewer catch basins.
Larvicide product is being applied to the City's storm sewer catch basin system. The City is utilizing two larvicide products, Altosid XR and Natular XRT. Both products are considered safe for use in storm sewer catch basin systems. Altosid XR is effective up to 150 days and Natular XRT is effective up to 180 days. Currently, a significant number of other suburban communities use similar larvicide products in their storm sewer catch basin systems.
Personal Protective Index
The DuPage County Health Department publishes a Personal Protective Index (PPI) to inform residents about West Nile Virus activity in the County. The PPI can be accessed here: Personal Protection Index
