IDEC Recognizes June Celebrations

Home Spotlights Posted on May 30, 2024

The City's Inclusion Diversity Equity and Awareness Commission (IDEC) honors federally recognized heritage and history months throughout the year as part of our commitment to building an inclusive community that values diversity.

In June, we recognize Immigrant Heritage Month, National Caribbean American Heritage Month, Pride Month, and Juneteenth (June 19).

  • Immigrant Heritage Month was first celebrated in 2014 and recognizes and honors immigrants in the United States.
  • Caribbean American Heritage Month was first celebrated in 2006 and recognizes the contributions of Caribbean Americans (both naturalized and U.S. citizens by birth) in the United States.
  • Pride Month was first celebrated in 1999 to recognize Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI+) individuals. Pride Month also commemorates the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a series of protests in New York City in 1969 that occurred after police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar. Gay rights organizations formed to fight for LGBTQI+ rights as a result of the riots.
  • Juneteenth was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, although celebrations go back to 1866. The day commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans on June 19, 1865, when an order in Texas proclaimed freedom for slaves in that state.

IDEC welcomes feedback, ideas, and suggestions to further the mission of inclusivity and respect for all in Warrenville. Submit comments to: idec@warrenville.il.us.
