[ARCHIVED] Text-to-911: Call if You Can, Text if You Can’t

Text 911 for emergencies.

Text-to-911 is now available in our area. This service helps people contact emergency services by text message when they are not able to make a voice call.

When to Text 9-1-1:

Texting 9-1-1 is for emergencies only. Use it if:

  • You are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or have a speech disability.
  • It’s not safe to speak (for example, during a break-in or domestic violence situation).
  • A medical emergency has made you unable to talk.

How to Text 9-1-1:

  • Enter “911” in the “To” field.
  • Type your exact location right away.
  • Say what help you need: police, fire, or ambulance.
  • Keep your message short and clear. Don’t use slang, emojis, or pictures.
  • Stay calm, answer questions, and follow instructions from the dispatcher.

Can I use Text-to-911?

Most major phone carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile/Sprint, and Dish Wireless, support text-to-911 in this area.

Misuse of 9-1-1, including texting for non-emergencies or making false reports, is illegal.
