[ARCHIVED] It's OAKtober, Oak Awareness Month

Closeup photo of oak tree leaves and green acorn.

It's OAKtober, Oak Awareness Month, first proclaimed by the Governor of Illinois in 2015. Oaks are majestic, iconic and resilient, evolving quickly in comparison to other tree species, making them better able to adapt to climate change.

To increase your "Oak Awareness" this month, identify an oak tree, collect acorns for sprouting and later planting, and check the Chicago Region Tree Initiative at chicagorti.org/program/oaktober for programs and resources.
