[ARCHIVED] Slow Down for Students - School Begins August 16

Back to school rules of the road for drivers

Protect the safety of all children: Slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid distracted driving.

School Zones are 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on school days when children are present, and the speed limit is 20 m.p.h. School begins August 16.

Reminders:

  • Don't use cell phones. Exceptions apply to emergency situations like calling 9-1-1 for police, fire, or ambulance emergency assistance.
  • Follow the crossing guard's instructions. Disobeying a crossing guard is a petty offense that requires a court appearance and carries a $150 fine.
  • Stop for loading and unloading school buses. Drivers are required to stop for school buses with their red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Cars on a four-lane road in the opposite direction to the loading or unloading school bus are not required to stop.
  • Don't use electronic hand-held devices unless in voice-activated or hands-free mode.
