DEEP FREEZE BEGINS CONTINUES WEEK OF JANUARY 15
Another round of snow is expected Thursday, January 18 with 1-3" forecast, though some isolated totals closer to 4" are possible.
Snow will end late Thursday night everywhere except in portions of NW Indiana, but gusty NW winds will create blowing and drifting snow.
Wind chills will be 10 to 30 degrees below zero Friday, January 19 through Sunday morning, January 21 coldest at night and in the early mornings. We'll warm up to 30 degrees by Monday, January 22.
Here are some tips for snow and cold weather:
IF YOU HAVE A POWER OUTAGE:
HOW TO PREVENT FREEZING PIPES:
- Keep the heat on to at least 50-55 degrees
- For cabinets that cover pipes on an outside wall, leave cabinet doors open for better exposure to heat
- When temps fall to below freezing, turn on your faucet and let the water run (make sure the water stream is as wide as a pencil)
- If you have a vacant rental property, contact the Water Department to have your water turned off. Also drain the lines and keep the thermostat set to at least 50-55 degrees.
- Experiencing low water pressure? This is a strong indicator that your pipes may be starting to freeze!
WARMING CENTERS:
The Warrenville Park District Recreation Center (3S260 Warren Avenue) is a designated Warming Center with operating hours listed below:

CREATE A TRAVEL SAFETY KIT:
If you own or operate a vehicle, it's essential to keep an on-the-go emergency kit!
For winter weather, add extra items to keep you safe in cold, snowy, or icy conditions, such as:
- Sand
- Blankets
- Warm clothing
- An ice scraper
- A shovel
PLAN AHEAD BEFORE YOU HIT THE ROAD:
Use the Illinois Department of Transportation's web-based interactive mapping site, Getting Around Illinois. You can find information on winter road conditions and view our live traffic cameras.
Start your planning here: https://idot.click/u6h. Remember, “Ice and snow, take it slow.” Slow down to keep yourself and everyone on the road safe.
BE SALT SMART:
Road salt is used to keep roads safe, but too much salt damages vehicles and infrastructure, harms pets and plants, and degrades rivers and wetlands.
City staff attend annual trainings and deicing workshops to learn best practices when using salt.
