[ARCHIVED] Phishing Scam Reminder: How to Protect Yourself

Graphic with a close-up photo of a keyboard key labeled “Phishing,” a fishing hook, and an @ symbol.

Scammers sometimes send emails that look official and may use City logos or City-style language. These messages may ask for payment, include an invoice, or pressure you to act quickly.

Please use the tips below to protect yourself.

What to do if you receive a suspicious email

If you are unsure about an email that claims to be from the City of Warrenville:

  • Do not click links or open attachments.
  • Do not send payment or personal information.
  • Contact the City to verify the message. Call City Hall at (630) 836-3050.

Check the sender’s email address

Before you respond, look closely at the sender’s email address.

City email addresses end with @warrenville.il.us

For permit and license payments through Community Development, payment links come through the City’s BS&A permit portal and use an email address that ends with @bsacloud.com

Common warning signs of phishing

Be cautious if an email:

  • Pressures you to pay right away
  • Includes an unexpected invoice or attachment
  • Uses urgent language like “final notice” or “pay immediately”
  • Asks for personal or banking information

Recent example

A resident recently reported a scam email that appeared to use City letterhead and claimed they owed zoning fees. The resident recognized it as suspicious and contacted the City.

Report suspicious messages

If you receive a suspicious email that claims to be from the City of Warrenville, please contact City Hall at (630) 836-3050 so staff can review it.
