[ARCHIVED] School Zone Laws Refresher

School Zone Speed limit sign (Image)

With students returning to school, now is the time to refresh your memory on school zone laws:

School Zone:  IL law says the school zone begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. The speed limit in all school zones on school days when children are present is 20 m.p.h.  More info…

No using cell phones in school zones: Exceptions to IL Law apply to emergency situations like calling 9-1-1 for police, fire, or ambulance emergency assistance.

No using electronic hand-held devices: IL Law does not allow use of any electronic device while driving (unless in a voice-activated or hands-free mode). This offense is a moving violation, and can count against a drivers’ record. Specific exceptions apply. More info…

Stop for loading/unloading buses: Drivers are required to stop for school buses with their red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Cars on a four-lane road in the opposite direction to the loading or unloading school bus are not required to stop. More info...

Obey crossing guard:  IL law makes disobeying a crossing guard a petty offense that requires a court appearance and carries a $150 fine. More info

  • Protect the safety of all children...slow down, allow extra time for travel, and avoid distracted driving!
